In 2024, Gerald "Phipps" Stewart was the first student at UNT to graduate with a Jain
Studies Certificate from UNT. His project explored on the liberational potential of
Jain contemplative practices as these relate to questions of free will and determinism.
Phipps relied on his own background as a certified yoga instructor to build an experiential
learning component into his project. He presented his research to students and faculty
in the Department of Philosophy and Religion on December 6. His accompanying poster
presentation was later displayed at the Jain Cultural Fair the following year.
