The philosophical, religious, spiritual, and scholarly traditions of India address fundamental questions about life, the meaning of life, and the meaning of living well. In PHIL 3620, students explore the Brahmanic or Vedic traditions known collectively as Hinduism today, alongside important contributions from the related traditions of Jainism and Buddhism. Topics including early philosphical views on the nature of reality, the meaning of spiritual liberation, and the practices like meditation and yoga that aim at spiritual attainment. We also explore contemporary phenomena such as Hindu religious practices in diasporic communities, the worldwide influence of Bollywood today, and the role of yoga in health and wellness movements.
