In this class, we will learn about a variety of philosophical and religious traditions that address themselves to the existential uncertainties of everyday life and offer strategies not only for coping but for thriving. We focuses on the rich interplay between Buddhism, whose roots lie in the Indian subcontinent, Daoism, an indigenous religion of China, and Shintoism, whose contemporary form in Japan is related to ongoing issues of modernization and globalization in Asia today. These traditions range from the spiritual to the political, with emphasis on personal liberation, societal transformation, and the possible connections between the two. Students will gain religious literacy, increase their capacity for cross-cultural dialogue, and broaden their understanding of historical trends across South and East Asia.
