Animal sanctuaries often focus on caring for animals not typically seen as “companions,” such as farm animals or labatory animals. The "microsanctuary" model is committed to the idea such safe havens matter, even when they include only a single rescued individual. The Microsanctuary Resource Center supports people who utlize their space and resources, no matter how limited, to provide compassionate care to individual animals.

The Center's stated core principles include ethical veganism and strict avoidance of the commodification of animal residents in any capacity. This means human caretakers do not consume, trade, or sell eggs from hens, milk from cows, wool from sheep, and so forth. This principled approach to sanctuary work helps us open up fundamental questions about the meaning of "sanctuary" and the dynamics of interspecies ethics.
